Dave Trier Featured in Forbes: The Future of Model Governance

As AI systems become more autonomous, enterprises face a growing need to rethink their model governance strategies. In his latest Forbes article, Dave Trier shares insights on navigating the rise of Small Language Models (SLMs) and Agentic AI, and how organizations can prepare for the future of responsible AI oversight.

We’re proud to share that Dave Trier, ModelOp’s Vice President of Product, has been featured in Forbes Tech Council with a new article exploring one of the most pressing shifts in enterprise AI: the rise of Small Language Models (SLMs) and Agentic AI — and what it means for the future of governance.

In his piece, The Next Wave: SLMs, Agentic AI and the Future of Model Governance, Dave examines how emerging AI technologies are pushing beyond traditional frameworks and why organizations must evolve their governance strategies to keep up.

“Agentic AI’s ability to reason and take action means it is no longer sufficient to evaluate models solely based on how they perform in a given test set,” Dave writes. “We must also assess how models behave in open environments, and what guardrails are in place to ensure their outputs remain acceptable.”

Dave highlights two major trends that are reshaping the governance landscape:

  • The shift toward Small Language Models (SLMs): As organizations prioritize domain-specific performance, cost efficiency, and operational control, SLMs are gaining traction over larger, more generalized models.
  • The emergence of Agentic AI: New systems capable of autonomous decision-making and dynamic adaptation require governance frameworks that go beyond traditional static evaluation methods.

Traditional compliance checklists and risk reviews are no longer enough. Enterprises will need continuous monitoring, real-time auditing, and dynamic guardrails to maintain control over increasingly complex and capable AI systems.

“The future of model governance must focus on observability, adaptability and responsibility,” Dave explains. “Enterprises must know when and how their AI is making decisions—and have mechanisms in place to intervene when necessary.”

At ModelOp, we believe the future of enterprise AI hinges on strong, adaptable governance. Dave’s perspective offers a clear, actionable framework for leaders who are navigating this rapidly changing landscape.
